School districts interested in more effectively using school and classroom student assessments will be interested in this unique opportunity to engage in an extended study of how balanced classroom assessment (assessment for and of learning) can be used to substantially improve student learning.
The Achieving Balance in Classroom Assessment Field Test offers educators in a select few school districts an opportunity to learn to use the formative assessment process as defined in the Michigan’s Formative Assessment for Michigan Educators (FAME) program, while also using resources from Smarter Balanced. Participants will learn how Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment Blocks, Focused Interim Assessment Blocks, and Tools for Teachers can be used to support instruction and create balance in classroom assessment. Research has shown that effective use of the formative assessment process during daily instruction is one of the most powerful continuous improvement activities that schools can engage in.
Participating school site teams will:
- Gain an understanding of the critical components of a balanced classroom assessment system, with a focus on the formative assessment process.
- Use this understanding to develop action plans to successfully implement a balanced assessment system in their buildings and classrooms to help support continuous improvement efforts
School sites will engage in learning about assessment in several fundamental areas, using these custom designed learning maps:
- Creating Balance in Classroom Assessment Systems: The Foundations;
- Bringing Balance to Classroom Assessment Systems with the Formative Assessment Process;
- Exploring the Ecosystem of the Smarter Balanced System of Assessment and Tools for Teachers
