Started my career as an Elementary Special Education teacher in East Grand Rapids and later moved to Rockford Public Schools. Within Rockford, I held the position of Elementary Special Education teacher, Teacher Consultant, and lead teacher for Lakes Elementary. Next, I made a transition to the role of Elementary Principal which I served four years, first, in Byron Center Public Schools and then within Sparta Area Schools. Next I had the honor of working for Kent Intermediate School District as the Director of Teaching and Learning. In this position, I had oversight of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Learning for the county. In the fall of 2012, I made the transition back to a district level Administrator and currently serve as the Director of Teaching and Learning. My goal in transitioning back to a local district was to be able to have direct working relationships with a constant group of educators where I could support them and have a positive influence on the transition to the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and the new SBAC Assessment. Other roles I continue to serve in include the Michigan Assessment Consortium Board and the MAISA General Education Leadership Network (GELN). I have served on the MAC board for three years and for the past two years have served as the chair for the professional learning committee. I serve in a similar role on the GELN as I have co-chaired the Professional Learning Committee for three years.
I have served on the MAC board since 2009. I have a passion to help all educators understand the power of formative assessment and the importance of quality summative assessment to drive instructional planning and improved student learning. My experiences on the MAC board have provided me with a new depth of knowledge of assessment and have provided me access to materials that can be used with teachers/administrators to deepen their knowledge and practices involving assessment; therefore allowing all educators to become more assessment literate. Our goal has been to provide all educators with similar resources and quality assessment training materials that will assist schools in developing a balance and quality assessment system.
